  49. Nonsense.  Parents expect this constantly.  Isolated family farms,
  50. Chinese rice paddies, and downtown New York City are all thoroughly

  96. We've had a LACK of *massive death* since the cold war started and 
  97. peace between the superpowers won't cause a drastic jump in the 
  98. population.

  100. The *threat* of major war between the USA and USSR over the past 
  101. 44 years has not caused many direct war deaths (since the two 
  102. powers haven't had a direct war and the threat isn't killing many).  
  103. Someone might counter this  by saying that the rivalry between the 
  104. two superpowers has caused wars between other countries ( and this 
  105. is a debate for another list),  BUT  it has NOT contributed to the 
  106. *massive death*  that the major world wars have caused.  The 
  107. 50,000 or so USA deaths in Vietnam is about the same number of 
  108. USA yearly traffic deaths.

  110. Realistically, I think that governments would not solve the 
  111. population problem by going into space as there are other ways of 
  112. population control that are (at this time) cheaper, easier and more 
  113. acceptable by most people.

  115. Being in the aerospace industry, I have happily seen a change of 
  116. attitude recently.  The managers see (and have felt) the decrease in 
  117. defense funding and are now actively chasing after the NASA bucks.   
  118. There are a lot more engineers in defense compared to  commerce or 
  119. space.  If engineers are losing defense jobs ,  there will  be pressure 
  120. to find and lobby for other engineering jobs (space-related 
  121. hopefully).  So, maybe if peace really breaks out,  then the excess 
  122. engineering resources could be used for space and other earthly 
  123. needs.

  126. there an author?  (I collect e-mail quotes and disclaimers).
